British Values

British values 3

Pioneer House High School is committed to serving its community and surrounding areas. It recognises the multi-cultural, multi faith and ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom, and therefore those it serves. It also understands the vital role it has in ensuring that groups or individuals within the school and college are not subjected to intimidation or radicalization by those wishing to unduly, or illegally, influence them.

The school and college accepts admissions from all those entitled to an education under British law, including pupils of all faiths or none. It follows the policies outlined by its governing body regarding equal opportunities, which guarantee that there will be no discrimination against any individual or group, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status, or similar. It seeks to serve all.

The Government emphasises that schools and colleges are required to ensure that key ‘British Values’ are taught in all UK schools/colleges. The government set out its definition of British values as:-

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Pioneer House High School does, through a wide range of activities, aim to meet these standards and uses strategies within its curriculum and beyond to secure such outcomes for students.

How do we incorporate these values into our offer?

At Pioneer House we are committed to integrating the core values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, respect, and tolerance into every aspect of our students' educational experience, especially during tutor time and collective worship sessions. We understand the significance of instilling these values in our students as they prepare to become active participants in society.

Our approach to incorporating British Values is intrinsically linked with our Rights Respecting Schools work. We believe that by nurturing an understanding of both rights and responsibilities, we equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to engage fully and positively in society.

Our weekly topics are carefully crafted to suit with our unique cohort of students, their experiences, and their personal contexts as 'Young Mancunians.' We recognize the importance of tailoring our curriculum to ensure relevance and engagement.

At the beginning of each year, we revisit the concept of democracy and voting. This serves as a foundational pillar for our students, providing repeated opportunities to develop a keen awareness and understanding of democracy, government, and the legislative process. Through interactive discussions, role-plays, and real-world examples, our students learn about the significance of their voice, the importance of participation, and not only how to vote but also why it matters.

Through our integrated approach to British Values education, we aim to foster a culture of respect, understanding, and inclusivity. By embracing diversity and celebrating differences, we prepare our students to navigate the complexities of modern society with empathy and resilience. Together, we strive to create a learning environment where every individual feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential as active and engaged citizens.
